Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the setting rate and time-dependent Shore A hardness changes of
the silicone-based resilient denture lining materials (Self-curing: Mucosoft¢ç, Sofreliner¢ç Tough M; Heat-curing:
Mucopren¢ç soft, Molloplast¢ç B). The setting behaviors of the resilient denture liners (RDL) were evaluated
using an oscillating rheometer. For Shore A hardness test, disc-shaped RDL specimens (D 35 ¡¿ T 6 mm) were
fabricated in aluminum molds. Shore A hardness was determined after 1 day and 28 days of water storage at
37¡¾1¡É and measured using a shore A durometer. Within self-cured RDL groups, Sofreliner Tough M showed
slower c u ring r ate compared t o that o f Mu cosoft as s hown w ith their scorch t ime as 3 a nd 2 m inu tes,
respectively. Their setting time was about 5 min, which is similar to that of the manufacturers¡¯ recommended
curing time. They showed similar flexibility with a resistance torque value as about 12 lb¡¤in. Heat-cured RDLs
(Mucopren¢ç soft and Molloplast¢ç B) showed significantly higher torque values (16.5 and 19.4 lb¡¤in, respectively)
comparing to those of self-cured RDLs (p<0.05). All the RDLs tested in this study could be classified
a s ISO Type A ( soft), and t he S hore A h ardness valu es o f the heat-cured material (Molloplast¢ç B,
Mucopren¢ç soft) were significantly higher than those of the self-cured material (Mucosoft¢ç, Sofreliner¢ç Tough
M)(p<0.05). For all the tested RDL groups, the hardness values measured after 28 days of water storage were
similar with those measured after 1 day of water storage (p>0.05). There was a positive correlation between
resistance t orqu e valu es a nd 2 4h-5s Shore A hardness valu es [ r= 0 .80, p= 0.20; resistance torque =
0.82¡¿(Shore A hardness value) - 14.11]
